Southbury is “Unique”! As the words “Unica Unaque” (the one and only) proclaim on the town seal, Southbury is the only community in the country with its name. Located on Interstate 84, midway between the cities of Danbury and Waterbury, Southbury’s location provides easy access to major business and commercial centers in Connecticut as well as in New York. Predominately a rural farming town before the opening of I84 in 1963, the town today is a charming blend of rural country areas, suburban neighborhoods and historic districts. Retaining its original rural feel is an important priority in this town. Town parks encompass over 200 acres and include a pool, beach, sports fields, tennis courts, play areas for children, a dog park and open areas for hiking or just enjoying nature. In addition, the local land trust owns or has conservation easements on over 1000 acres and the Audubon Center at “Bent of the River’ boasts a 700 acre wildlife sanctuary with fifteen miles of trails. There are also three Connecticut State Parks, a bridle trail, two golf courses and the Shepaug Dam Bald Eagle Observation Area located in town.
The town is home to three supermarkets, a department store, several national chain stores, many boutiques, galleries, medical offices and specialty markets (including a Farmer’s Market during the summer months). Southbury is a partner with the town of Middlebury in the highly regarded Region 15 school district.
In 2009, Southbury was noted for preserving its historical heritage and named a “Preserve America Community” by the federal government. Southbury is proud of its five historic districts and nine buildings listed in the Register of Historic Places, including the Bullet Hill School, the oldest continuous use public school building the United States (1769-1941).
Today, the Bullet Hill School hosts a living museum program every spring for area elementary school children, enabling them to experience a day in the life of an 1850’s student.
There is a diverse mixture of housing opportunities in Southbury with many single family homes and condominiums, Heritage Village, one of the top twenty retirement communities in the United States, and two assisted living facilities.
